Museums Curacao

Curacao is more than just sun, sea and beach. There is also a lot of culture. The museums on Curacao are just as versatile as the island itself. The range of museums is not only diverse, but also very extensive. Curacao has a long and rich history of which various aspects are highlighted in various museums. A museum visit is a fun way – for young and old – to learn more about, for example, the history of Curacao, what art is made or how it used to be at sea. Discover a number of museums here that you can visit during your vacation on Curacao.

Curacao Museum

Located in the western part of Otrobanda, you will find the Curaçao Museum in a colonial-style building. This extensive museum portrays the geographic history of Curaçao and displays utensils of the Indians from before the time of Columbus. Also maps and cartographic representations of America and the Caribbean, professions practiced by Afro-Curaçaoans after the abolition of slavery, their faith and way of life, a traditional plantation kitchen, antique mahogany furniture (18th and 19th centuries) and paintings of local and you can see international artists there.

Kura Hulanda Museum

The Kura Hulanda Museum is located at the harbor in the center of Willemstad.
This museum impressively shows the Transatlantic Slave Trade as a whole from the capture of the slaves in Africa, via the shipment to the resettlement in the New World.
The Kura Hulanda Museum shows how the African, together with his cultural heritage, have influenced Curaçao and the Caribbean societies to this day.

Maritiem museum

Curaçao owes its existence to the sea. Curacao has a strategic location and the natural harbor made the island a major maritime and trade center from early history.
The museum is located in a mansion built in 1729 at the Waaigat inlet just above the floating market. The exhibitions include antique miniatures, 17th-century ship models and maps, some of which date back to 1500.

Tula museum

One of the most important stories in Curaçao’s history began in one of the most picturesque places on the island, on top of a hill near Playa Kenepa. A slave named Tula set up a mother tongue revolt against his Dutch masters plantation in Landhuis Kenepa. The exhibition is spread over two floors and shows how people lived and worked in these unthinkable times.

Octagon museum

It was in “the Octagon” that the Venezuelan freedom fighter Simón Bolívar spent several months gaining ideas and power to bring his troops back together. To bring down the Spanish colonial rule in South America for good. The “Octagon” is set up as a small museum in memory of the connection between Curaçao and Simón Bolívar. The romantic setting, in a unique combination with the almost tangible historical ambiance, makes the “Octagon” a beautiful location. For example for holding elegant wedding receptions, special gatherings, music performances and poetry evenings.

Savonet museum

The Savonet Museum is the newest museum in Curaçao! This museum has a unique concept and is located in the middle of Christoffel Park. The largest nature reserve on the island. Located in the former plantation house (called ‘country house’) of the Savonet Plantation. It gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of the former inhabitants of the area with a lot of background information, from the first Arowak Indians who came to the island almost 4000 years ago to modern times.
